Many anglers have no option on their home waters but to fish in rather crowded conditions. when contemplating a fishing holiday, many such anglers must long to fish for brown trout in solitude amid beautiful scenery. Few waters now hold truly wild fish and those that do need conserving. Dunoon & District Angling Club however can offer brown trout fishing in surroundings approaching the ideal, amongst some of the most beautiful scenery in Scotland, and all within 15 Miles of Dunoon.
For salmon and sea trout, the Club’s river fishings again provide a wonderful backdrop. The catches of salmon and sea trout now appear to be improving after the shortages of recent years which affected most west highland rivers. All the Club's rivers are "late and spate'., ie fish best from June onwards, and need a fair head of water to fish well.Kate Mclaren
For the inevitable times when the brown trout are "off the take" and the rivers are running low, the Club has a popular rainbow fishery where a low rod limit applies and where there is a good chance of a decent fish from those regularly stocked. Day, and in some cases weekly permits are available at reasonable cost.
Black ZuluThe Club's trout lochs are "fly fishing only" and there is a total ban on the carrying of spinning rods, spinning tackle, bait or bubble floats. On the rivers, any legal lure may be used (except for the Ruel which is fly only, no spinning or bait fishing) In all cases there is a total ban on the use of maggots on club waters. Anglers may fish with only one rod at a time and the use of a fixed or unattended rod is prohibited.
The Club encourages conservation, particularly with the fragile stocks of salmon and sea trout. "Brown" trout caught in the rivers are very often sea trout which have rapidly adopted their coloration to river conditions. or are the progeny of sea trout and will eventually go to sea. Healthy hen fish, both salmon and sea trout, are vital to future stocks. It is hoped visiting anglers will exercise restraint in the numbers of such fish killed.
All of the standard flies will take trout on the Club's trout lochs, both wet and dry, but size can be important and anglers should not neglect to try flies dressed down to No.14 hook size or even No.16.
